Solar and heat pump questions, answered.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Usually not. Solar panels on the roof of a house generally fall under permitted development, provided they sit no more than 20cm proud of the roof. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra restrictions on where panels can go. We check this before designing the system.
Is there a grant for heat pumps?
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump for most existing homes in England and Wales, with a higher figure currently available for homes coming off oil or LPG. The installer applies and the grant comes off the invoice. New builds generally don't qualify, though self-builds can.
Is battery storage worth it?
It depends how you use energy. A battery stores daytime solar generation for the evening and can also charge on cheaper overnight tariffs. For households out during the day it often makes a real difference. For others the numbers are closer, and we will tell you honestly which camp you are in.
Do I need planning permission for an air source heat pump?
In England, most do not. The rule that kept units a metre from the boundary was scrapped in 2025, which opened up far more properties. The unit still has to meet size limits and pass a noise assessment, and listed buildings still need an application.
Will a heat pump work in an older house?
Yes, if it is designed properly. That means a room-by-room heat loss calculation, radiators or underfloor heating sized for lower flow temperatures, and sometimes some work on insulation and draughts first. Heat pumps fail when they are fitted like boilers. We design them as part of the building.
What does MCS certification mean and why does it matter?
MCS is the certification scheme for renewable installations in the UK. It sets the standard for design and installation, and it is what makes you eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant and for payments for the electricity your panels export to the grid. All our installations are carried out by MCS-certified installers.
